Max Media Launcher
Would the new Max Media Launcher, apparently a NoPass card, make this any cheaper? It would replace the PassMe2 and game, and it would let us knock the SuperCard down to GBAMP v2 provided that we can find a cheap-enough CF writer. --Tepples 18:00, 28 April 2006 (EDT)
- The page states "from zero to homebrew or piracy". The GBAMP is mostly piracy-proof. Supercard is still the cheapest means of piracy on DS. --M2pt5 00:06, 1 May 2006 (EDT)
Homebrew vs Piracy
With the coming of the NoPass maybe it's time to split the list up into piracy of ds roms and just homebrew/emulation, since the gbamp is quite a bit cheaper and easier to find than a supercard.
And while I'm at it, it might not be the best idea to link each thing to just one specific store since prices do fluctuate and you don't seem to update the article often enough to keep tabs on that. Maybe it'd be better to give a general list of stores that carry flash devices, possibly with recommendation about the current cheapest place but still giving people options if the article gets a bit old. Also, you don't take shipping and saving on shipping by ordering several things from the same place into account. Sorry, this got long. ;p --Titney 10:26, 21 May 2006 (EDT)
- Just noticed you mentioned the GBAMP already... but yeah. :P stores. --Titney
- I just checked Froogle. DS shipping isn't a problem, as most of the developed world has brick-and-mortar retailers that carry the DS. MAX Media Launcher isn't yet sold anywhere but Datel's own codejunkies store. GBAMP doesn't ever seem to come in a bundle with a CF writer, and the cheapest CF writer I could find on bestbuy.com was $20. Buying from an online-only retailer doesn't help with saving on shipping, which negates most of the price advantage vs. a SuperCard CF Combo, especially given that a lot of GBA homebrew requires the SC's extra memory. And I could only find such a combo at Kick Trading. I think the best way to handle this might be to link to Froogle for each item. --Tepples 19:41, 22 May 2006 (EDT)
- Yeah, froogle links would probably be good (still only really good for people within the US though, no?). To be honest I don't really see the point in linking to where to get a nintendo ds at all, but I guess it doesn't hurt so. ;p - Unless Nintendo slams DMCA on datel's ass the media launcher will probably get wider availability eventually. - Do you mind if I dig up and post links to alternative stores for SC/GBAMP? Can make it a separate section at the bottom "alternative sources" or something. And even though it might be beyond the scope of this article(?) some people might be looking for something beyond the cheapest possible. It's good to have a repository of links to point to. ---Titney 20:31, 22 May 2006 (EDT)
- I mentioned the DS itself for completeness, as you probably guessed. I'm not so sure the MAX Media Launcher will be available elsewhere because I haven't seen the MAX Drive Pro (similar device for GameCube homebrew) in EBGames. If you have more information and think it would be useful to homebrewers and/or pirates, be bold in updating the page :-) --Tepples 22:48, 23 May 2006 (EDT)
- I'm not scared. ;P but it'd be pointless to go through the work of compiling the links only to have you edit them out again. Oh, and I'm totally not against linking to where to buy the MML at the present time, in fact I think a few more direct links to where to find it in their store would be good since it's not *that* obvious. ---Titney 23:21, 23 May 2006 (EDT)
