Snezziboy Compatibility List

The Chart
This is a compatibility chart for Snezziboy, an SNES emulator for the GBA. When editing, copy and paste the first row's data (all empty cells) to use as a generic template.
Also, when adding a game to the list, make sure that you at least put it in the chart. You can add additional notes if you want, but it is necessary to put it in the chart.
Be sure to check the snezzi.dat article! The compatibility chart assumes you are using the patches on that page.
Note that since Snezziboy v0.26 was only a minor bugfix from v0.25, if a game is listed as being playable with v0.25 then it will most likely work the exact same in v0.26.

Notes for Specific Games
Acrobat Mission
There are only a few very minor problems with graphics and backgrounds. The game does play somewhat slow when there are lots of moving objects on the screen, but generally it's almost 100% speed and very playable.
Action Pachio (J)
Game's effect seems near perfect, with snezzi.dat patch it boots at almost full speed, highlly enjoyable!
Adventures of Batman and Robin
The game seems to work pretty well, and with the SNES Advance speedhacks, the game runs at a very playable speed. However, the graphics get screwed up pretty easily. Basically, in order to fix the graphics, you must press L+R+Start to enter the Snezziboy config menu and then select "Return to Game"
For some reason, entering and exiting the Snezziboy menu fixes the graphics, at least temporarily.
Aside from that, the game is fairly playable.
Aero Fighters
Seems playable without problems, aside from slightly slow speed, especially when there are many moving objects on the screen.
Alladin
NOTE: has severe graphics and speed issues in v0.25. Use v0.26 instead.
A few flickering issues, but otherwise fully playable. Speed is very good with the snezzi.dat patch. The only noticeable bug is the fact that the screen flashes black for a split second occasionally.
Alien 3
Very playable. With the patch, speed lies at about 90-100%.
There are a few graphical bugs in the titlescreen and also when you use these blue computers.
Bahamut Lagoon
Game starts, but text is invisible. Turn HDMA on for proper background scrolling. Speed is decent.
Bio Metal
Very Playable! The patch increases speed, but in areas with many moving objects, severe slowdowns occur.
NOTE: only a portion of the first level has been tested.
Black Hawk
Game will not boot without snezzi.dat patch. The opening logos are slow (speedhacking them broke gameplay), but actual gameplay is at an okay speed.
Set to Mode 1 in order to see text, but note that objects and sometimes the screen itself will flash different colors. Setting the screen to Mode 2 fixes this, but renders text invisible.
Breath of Fire 1
Seems very playable, and speed is also very smooth. Need to use the Snezziboy-specific patch for it to work.
Captain Commando
Screen is incredibly dark, making the game unplayable.
Castlevania - Dracula X
Energy bar sometimes disappears.
Background in second level moves, but it isn't a big issue.
Chrono Trigger
It is somewhat playable, but impossible to play through entirely. HDMA support allows for better navigation, but text is invisible, as are some objects.
Battles are difficult due to the invisible text.
Speed is very slow, especially during battles.
If you find that you can't move, try pressing A repeatedly, since it's possible that a textbox is open without you knowing it.
Donkey Kong Country
The bug with the screen flickering in the snow levels was solved, so now the game is 100% playable aside from 2 other bugs:
Inverted colors in Torchlight Trouble level (level with the parrot)
Blackout Basement level - some enemies and platforms are not visible
Donkey Kong (the character) has some minor gfx glitches when moving.
Otherwise, it is incredibly playable, and speed is at almost 100%. One of the most compatible games for Snezziboy.
Donkey Kong Country 2
There are some moderate graphics glitches, but it's still playable. Some levels require the use of HDMA to be navigable.
Some text is unreadable or invisible, like the text in Kong Kollege. The important thing to remember there is that Save Game is at the very top of the list and that Leave Kollege is at the very bottom.
The lava levels in the second world have some serious background scrolling issues, even with HDMA on. The top half of the screen will scroll correctly, but the bottom half will scroll too fast, making it difficult to land on solid ground.
Some changes to the background settings for specific locations:
- Honeycomb levels - change to 2XXX in order to see correctly. Some other levels benefit from this as well, so try it out if some of the background objects block the view of your characters.
- Kreepy Krow boss level - change to 2222 in order to make him visible.
- Water levels - change to XX0X in order to partially see the water level.
Note that the cheat to obtain all 75 Kremcoins in the first level does work.
Donkey Kong Country 3
HDMA support allows for many levels to become playable at the expense of speed.
Note that the background settings vary by level. For the world map and some levels, 11XX works well, but for the first level and some others you'll want 31XX. Murky Mill will need 22XX, but then it's difficult since you can't see which rats are in the light and which ones aren't. Some levels need HDMA, some don't. Still, aside from its slow speed, it's about as playable as DKC2.
Double Dragon 5
The game works almost perfectly, although speed is somewhat slow. Slight screen flickering problems. Some texts will only show up if you enter and then exit the Snezziboy menu (like the main selection screen).
Dragon Quest 1+2
DQ1: If you set the BG to:
BG0: Disabled
BG1: Disabled
BG2: Disabled
BG3: Disabled
Then you can see the castle and everything, but the text isn't visible...
If you then set BG2 to 0 and the others to Disabled, the text becomes visible but everything else disappears.
With all backgrounds set to Disabled, the game is near perfect aside from the missing text, which is crucial to gameplay.
The same goes for the battles. With all backgrounds at Disabled, you can see the enemies but not the textbox.
After setting BG2 to 0 you can see the Textbox all everything. So I wrote in by "playable" just "Partial".
I think with some Patience and knowledge off the Game it COULD be beatable
DQ2: The same as DQ1.
Set all to Disabled and its fine. But the odd thing is that it's first very corrupt.
But after I get in the Config Menue and then out off it, everything was fine...
Very odd... btw. For the text just look above. Its exactly like DQ1 expect that you can see the Character Sprites.
Earthbound
Some of the text is obstructed by other objects.
The game is somewhat slow. I can't say how the battles look, since that was the first time I played that game. If someone knows the game and has the patience to play until a battle, please report about its playability.
Battles are playable. Victory screen goes crazy and mostly black for some reason, but text bleeds through so you can sometimes read it.
Famicom Tantei Club Part II
After the Nintendo logo you the game crashes.
Final Fantasy II
Speed is very good, but text is invisible, and it looks like battles would be difficult due to stretched menus. Modifying the background value of BG2 might help in battle.
Final Fantasy III
HDMA required, text invisible, battles very corrupt. Unplayable.
Final Fantasy IV
Well... Not REALLY playable but better than with the last version.
The Worldmap is very garbled, but some areas like the castle and the crystal room are now perfect. However, just like in SNES Advance, the battles are garbled. But, just like FFV, it needs more time for testing. If I have time, I'll test it more.
Final Fantasy V
Well... Not REALLY playable. It goes further than the previous version.
The text is displayed, but in order to see it you must enter and then exit the Snezziboy config menu.
The game runs very slowly, but it has not been tested with a speedhack patch yet.
Maybe it IS playable, or at least partially. The worldmap is, just like in SNES Advance, VERY garbled.
Gemfire
Very playable, although somewhat slow.
Gun Force
The opening sequence where the words merge is very slow (speedhacking it broke the title screen). In addition, the actual gameplay is very slow as well (there wasn't much to speedhack). It is still playable however.
The main bug is that when shooting horizontally, the bullet graphics do not start at the correct spot (the barrel of the gun), and they tend to wrap around to the other side of the screen if they reach one edge. The actual bullet object will still shoot in the correct path though, so you'll still be able to kill enemies easily. Shooting in other directions looks and works fine.
Hook
Game crashes before first level without the snezzi.dat patch. With the patch, you can play the first level, but it's highly unplayable. The backgrounds do not scroll correctly and graphics are seriously screwed up.
Hokuto no Ken 6 (J)
Characters selection screen little grabled, ignore that game works pretty find with speedhack (runs at full speed!) Highlly enjoyable!
Illusion of Gaia
Game works well at good speed. Text is a bit hard to read due to scaling, but it's fully playable nonetheless. Use the snezzi.dat patch to fix freezing issues when learning and using melodies.
You cannot see any part of the world map in Mode 7, so switch to Mode 1 in order to see your sprite and the available options for where to go.
Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures
HUD is invisible, so you can't see how much energy is left. Still, speed is decent, around 75% with the speedhacks, and other graphics look fine.
Kirby's Dream Course
The current "best values" are not universal to the entire game. For the title screen menu, you'll want settings of XX0X, but then for the screen for "Members" or "New Member" etc. you'll want XXXX. However, once the game actually begins you'll want to switch to 2X2X so that the green border lines are visible. I tried many combinations, but 2X2X provides the best gameplay. There were no options that showed the opening menus correctly while still retaining correct graphics during gameplay.
The game itself is fairly playable, although scaling the power meter graphic does create some difficulties.
Knights of the Round
Game boots but the whole screen is very dark all the time. Reason is unknown. Game is unplayable because of this.
Killer Instinct
Game does NOT boot with the patch. Without the patch, it boots and shows some screens like the different logos (Nintendo, Rare etc.)
Then you get to the title screen, which is is very corrupt - you can only see some screenpieces.
By the way, it is IMPERATIVE that you don't press any buttons until the title screen. If you press one then it will crash after the first logo!
Legend of the Mystical Ninja, The
Playable, although once again it is always in multiplayer mode, with you in control of both characters.
Legend of Zelda, The: A Link To The Past
It boots fine, text is readable, and name entry is possible. Aside from the outside rain not appearing when using the ideal BG settings (if you can see the rain, you can't see anything else), graphics seem to work find. Speed is rather slow, probably somewhere around 50-60%, but otherwise playable.
Lion King, The
As long as the settings are right, it works great. I havent tried out the stampede level yet, since that would be the one most likely to have a problem. So far, the only problem is that Simba has a few graphical glitches while running, but other than that, it works fine.
With the snezzi.dat patch, the game runs at nearly full speed with only a few minor slowdowns.
Lufia 2 - Rise of the Sinistrals
Game boots but is unplayable because the character sprites are invisible.
If you set BG1 to 1 it's possible to see a bit of the character sprites and some of the text, but then the whole screen gets scrambled. The world map is very corrupt.
Mario is Missing
Game has serious graphical errors whenever leaving the Start menu. Setting BG2 to 0 lets you see text, but not much else. Unplayable.
Mario Paint
The rom names that are up there are ones that dantheman has tested and verified to actually boot in Snezziboy, with the correct control configuration. If you wish to use your own, be sure that it has been modified so that you can use normal joypad controls instead of the SNES Mouse. Also, if you're using the Fairlight Trainer one, or any other one that requires user input before actually starting the game, be aware that that screen will likely be invisible. You will still be able to boot the game if you hit the controls the right way (IE, in the Fairlight Trainers, press B once, Down twice, and then B once again).
Recommended roms are the BS Mario Paint ones and H1 and H6, as they do not require user input before starting the game.
The game seems to work all right, despite somewhat slow speed.
A quick obvservation that may be false: it appears that the first two roms in the chart (the BS Mario Paint ones) do not produce any save data.
Mega Man 7
Pretty good, but slow sometimes.
The background settings above are for normal gameplay. If you want to see the pause menu graphics or fix some other graphics glitches (like with the first boss), simply switch it from X2XX to 1000. Note that this may create screwed up backgrounds, so switch back once you're done.
Mickey Mania
Freezes at the opening logo. Attempts to hack the SPC loop have proved futile so far.
Mortal Kombat 3
The Game isn't really playable. It boots and you can choose a character and fight but for some odd reason, it always selects Multiplayer mode. When you choose your character, it selects that as the second character as well. When the game starts, you have control of both characters.
Ninja Warriors, The
You can't see the text in the beginning, but that's not a major problem. The only real issue is with the character select. If you absolutely have to see the character you're selecting, change the background settings to 10XX or 00XX. Each one shows different parts.
Aside from that, the game is very playable with good speed.
Romancing Saga
Game does boot. When using the SNES Advance patches, it crashes after choosing "New Game". If you don't use the patch, the game is still unplayable due to extensive use of HDMA and other corrupt graphics.
Rudora No Hihou
Some text is visible, although most is not. The same thing occurs when an English IPS patch is applied. Graphics look okay otherwise, but game is most likely unplayable due to the missing text.
Secret of Evermore
The game boots, but incredibly slow speed and horribly mangled graphics prevent the game from being playable.
Street Fighter 2 - Turbo
You can go in-game, but the screen is very dark. Like with Mortal Kombat, the Multiplayer option is always selected.
Sim Ant
Not really playable. On the grass field, you can only see a quarter of the whole screen. In addition, the only way to see some options and menus is to enter the Snezziboy config menu and then exit it.
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts
Very very slow. In addition, the HUD is invisible. Theoretically playable.
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels work fine. 80-100% speed. The "Best Settings" are for those two games.
Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 run at less than 50% speed.
Note: a speedhack that originated from SNES Advance's Superdat seems to have broken Super Mario Bros. 2 since Snezziboy v0.22, so be sure to get the updated snezzi.dat settings to fix this.
Super Mario All-Stars & World
NOTE: does NOT work with the SNES Advance fixes applied - gives black screen. Without the patches however, it runs very slow, almost too slow to play. The games seems to run fine, but the speed issues ruin it.
Super Mario Kart
Game boots and it's possible to get into a race, but once the race starts it's unplayable. You cannot see anything aside from your character and the lakitu. Forcing Snezziboy to use Mode 7 does not work.
Super Mario World
Very minor graphics glitches in the castles, but for the most part the game is fully playable. Set the Backdrop setting to "YES" to solve the "black sky" problem.
Super Metroid
It is somewhat playable, although very slow even with the speedhack. In the elevator shaft, you will need to force Mode 7 in order to see anything. Note that there is a possibility that the game will crash when attempting to escape from the space station. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If it crashes on you, just try again.
If you wish to bypass the area completely, just complete the area in an SNES emulator and then rename the SNESGAME.srm save file to SNESGAME.smc.sav and Snezziboy will automatically use it for its save file.
There are no background settings that will allow for flawless display of both the Energy bar and the start menu. In order to see the start menu, change the background values from 221X to 222X. Note that in some areas in-game you will need to switch to 222X as well just to see the foreground.
Super Ninja Boy
The worldmap has a couple of issues. When you move into certain areas, a square area of the worldmap will turn black. When you leave the area, visibility returns. It's not a major issue. Aside from that, graphics and speed are both great.
Tetris 2
Very good graphics, but speed is horrible.
Tetris Attack
Speed is fairly slow, and it has the same issue as SNES Advance: instead of the entire stack rising at a steady pace, the cursor itself does. After a while, the cursor will be almost a whole row above the blocks it's actually swapping. Once the new line finally rises enough to become part of the stack, the cursor returns to the correct position, at least until the next row starts rising.
This game HAS been ported over to the GBA, with a title of "2 in 1 - Dr. Mario and Puzzle League" so it might be more rewarding to play that rather than the emulated SNES version. There is also a Super Game Boy version called just "Tetris Attack" which works fine with Goomba Color.
Thunder Spirits
Speed is great most of the time. Very playable, but there are occassional flashing of the screen that slows the game down, and this only happens when certain enemies appear. Overall, I've cleared the game to the 4th stage before it might get somehow stuck.
U.N. Squadron
Turn on HDMA to allow for proper background scrolling (so you don't hit stuff on the ground). Fairly decent speed, probably around 75-85%. Very playable. Recommended control settings are CTRL+A, A, CTRL+B, B to control the SNES's A, B, X, and Y buttons respectively.
Yoshi's Cookie
When playing, the new blocks that come in do not show up graphically, but rather as a 2-digit code.
