SnezziDS Compatibility List
From PHWiki
This is a compatibility list for SnezziDS, an SNES emulator for the DS and a port of Snezziboy. When editing, copy and paste the first row's data (all empty cells) to use as a generic template.
Also, when adding a game to the list, make sure that you at least put it in the chart. You can add additional notes if you want, but it is necessary to put it in the chart.
I also recommend that you set "BACKDROP" to "YES" and "BG FORCED MODE" to "AUTO". For the BG settings look in the Chart below.
The Chart

Notes for Specific Games
2020 Super Baseball
Menu's look and sound fine. Strange graphical scrolling and glitches during game. Unplayable.
A.S.P. Air Strike Patrol
Crashes to black screen after main menu.
Acrobat Mission
Works well (only tested in No$GBA)
Actraiser
Looks and sounds fine. Game no longer crashes when dying.
The Addams Family
Background scrolling is not working. Game is playable but it is hard to see where you're going.
Aero the Acro-Bat 2
Severe graphic corruption. Pretty much unplayable.
Aero Fighters
Plays great until first boss, then hangs. Very unfortunate.
Aerobiz
Intro and cutscenes extremely distorted. Main game displays fine with a few minor graphic issues. Some menus dificult to navigate because of cursor issues. Music is fine. Mostly playable with some issues.
Al Unser Jr's Road to the Top
Freezes at title screen. May be sound related, needs further testing with nosound version of SnezziDS.
Aladdin
Works great. Problems:
-Some layer problems (Aladdin seems to be partially behind the builings)
-Screen sometimes flickers black
-Sky is partially black
-You can’t see what you select in the titlescreen
Alien 3
Works very great. No problems.
Aliens VS Predator
Adjusting background layers makes player visible when they pick up the cloaking powerup.
Plays and sounds great!
Animaniacs
Only aparent problem is the backgrounds being glitched, but they're glitched to the point of making the game unplayable.
Arcade's Greatest Hits
Menu boots fine, but returns immediately to the main menu when selecting a game to play.
Arcana
Game boots now and works fine. Problems:
-Text is only visible in the intro. Ingame it's invisible.
-A lot of the tiles are black (like the sky)
-The BG settings are different. I couldn’t find a good one. Just try a little aound.
Axelay
Graphics get glitched out sometimes (when the clouds start in the first level for example), but it fixes it's self without hindering gameplay.
Bahamut Lagoon
Game does not boot in v0.25a, although it was unplayable in all previous versions due to invisible text and lack of HDMA support.
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
The game is playable, but has scrolling issues. You can't see your health bar at all. Speed at 100%
Scrolling issues and health bar fixed in v0.28a
Beavis and Butt-head
Playable with some issues. Impossible to see lifebar and ammo while still being able to see the background. Need to switch between BG Priorities depending on the situation.
Music gets kind of screechy and distorted.
Bio Metal
Works great now. The energy bar is now visible, as is the cloud sky. The only major issue is that you need to change BG1 from X to 0 at the end of the first level in order to make the boss visible.
Bisyoujyo Senshi Sailor Moon - Another Story (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon - Another Story)
Text does not display normally. It will show up if you go into the configuration menu and then exit again. Otherwise all dialogue is missing. Layering problem also exists with character icons and text. Works okay otherwise. Sound is pretty good.
Black Hawk
Nothing then a black screen. Perhaps it boots with the snezzi.dat patch, as the game only works in Snezziboy when the patch is applied. This has not been tested however.
Breath of Fire 1
Works great. Problems:
-Some layer problems
-When you defeat an enemy, the screen turns black for about a second and then returns to normal.
If you change BG0 to 2, battles become nearly perfect, although this modificiation turns the worldmap into a large grass field, so change it back after a battle is finished.
Breath of Fire 2
Works great. Problems:
-Some Layer Problems
-All the texts in the battles are only half visible. For instance, for the "command" item, you can only see the upper half of the word.
BS Chrono Trigger - Character Library
Works great. Only Music is very distorted.
BS Chrono Trigger - Jet Bike Special
Works great. Only Music is very distorted.
I recommend Setting “BG Forced Mode” to 0 and turn the “Background” option Off.
If you turn it on the Background is white and the selection is hard to read.
BS Chrono Trigger - Music Library
Works great. Only Music is very distorted.
Castlevania – Dracula X
Works great. Problems:
-The energy bar sometimes disappears due to layer problems.
With the partially implemented HDMA the flames in the first level are now correctly viewable.
Also the constantly scrolling BG in Level 2 is solved.
The current BG settings are only for the first stage. Upon reaching the second stage, it is recommended that you set change BG0 from 0 to 1.
Chrono Trigger
Does not boot. Curiously, it does boot in Snezziboy.
v0.28a: Nearly perfect graphics, though there are slowdowns in battles. Sound is pretty much perfect but music is garbled and staticy. Fully playable!
Clay Fighter
Nothing then a Black Screen.
Clay Fighter 2
Game loads, and allows you to get through picking your character... But the fighting never starts, they just stand there. Screen constantly flickers as well.
Clock Tower
Nothing then a Black Screen
Contra III - The Alien Wars (U) [!]
Konami logo animation goofy. The purple bar doesn't go across the entire screen. Bomb explosion, tanks, and some backgrounds invisible or graphically glitched. Tank doesn't move properly with background. Layering problems require frequent switching. Playable otherwise. Sound works.
Recommended settings: 1203
Alternate settings: 1003
Demon's Crest
Looks perfect after the intro boss battle. If the screen glitches out try pausing and unpausing it. The world map actually does work (I made it to the forest stage), but without Mode 7 it's a pain to steer because the map has no depth or rotation.
Desert Strike
Have to cycle sprite priorities between main game screen and map screen. Entirely playable. Sound very accurate.
Doom
Because of the use of the “Super FX” Chip the Screen remains black.
Donkey Kong Country
Works great. Problems:
-Colors are inverted in the Torchlight Trouble level (level with the parrot, but it’s completely playable)
-In the Blackout Basement level, the screen doesn’t get dark as it should, yet the enemy sprites disappear like normal.
And the famous bug still exists as of v0.25:
Since version 0.22a, there is a major bug that makes the game unplayable: the game crashes at every boss level.
Because of that I stated the playability as "partial"
Other improvements I found:
To see the rain in Level 2 change BG2 from X to 0.
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Diddy's Kong Quest
Game works great. Problems:
The text is invisible (like the Kong College…)
In v0.25, the game randomly crashes completely.
Some other notes from the Snezziboy compabitility list:
- Honeycomb levels - change to 2XXX in order to see correctly. Some other levels benefit from this as well, so try it out if some of the background objects block the view of your characters.
- Kreepy Krow boss level - change to 2222 in order to make him visible.
- Water levels - change to XX0X in order to partially see the water level.
Other info:
- The cheat to obtain all 75 Kremcoins in the first level does work.
- The partially HDMA implementation makes the game nearly full playable.
All the levels that had incorrect background scrolling are now correctly visible. Only the lava Levels from the second world are a bit messed up.
Donkey Kong Country 3 - Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Works great. I completed the first world. Problems:
-DKC3 has many graphical bugs. Look at the ice levels for instance.
-Text is invisible
Other improvements:
-Change the BG Setting to: 3, 1, X, X for the first level.
-For the Ice level: Change BG1 from X to 0. (Same goes for the first Boss)
-For the Murky Mill level, the setting 2, 2, X, X is more or less recommend.
-For the Factory Levels: X, 3, 2, X (Shows the correct Background and the enemies)
This setting shows the light partially which is needed in this level.
-Now there is only one bug remaining. You can’t move in the very last world (K.Rool’s Castle). If this bug is solved, the game should become fully playable.
Dragon Ball Z - Super Butoden (J)
Playable with sound, but seems to have a upward-scrolling refresh line like a CRT monitor. Also, background doesn't split between players when they go airborne. VERY slow. Occasionally freezes.
Dragon Ball Z - Super Butoden 2 (V1.0) (J)
Freezes at main menu. Part of background is also missing.
Dragon Ball Z - Super Butoden 3 (J)
Locks up right before match begins. Screen stretches and then sound keeps looping.
Dragon Quest 1+2
Works badly. Text is visible, although nothing else is. If you change the BG settings, you can make the tiles visible, although this renders text invisible.
No BG settings were added to the chart since they are very experimental.
Dragon Quest 6
Looks and plays great, but dialog text doesn't work. Menu text does though. Not sure if the battles work, as I couldn't get far enough to see.
Drakkhen
Title screen and intro music badly distorted. Some missing textures on overworld map. Mostly playable, but needs further testing.
Dungeon Master
Title screen and sound fine. 3d view is just a mess of random lines. Unplayable.
Earthbound
Game runs pretty good! Speed at about 100%. Issues:
-Text is sometimes hardly to read because some objects are over the text. Otherwise perfect.
By the way, I'm not sure if the battles are perfect since I don't know how they should look. I can only say battle is perfect from what I saw.
All boss battles are corrupt and difficult to play.
The menus and text boxes tend to not have the correct text, but rather reflect your previous battle. They say things such as how much exp you gained, damage you did, etc
Earthworm Jim 2
Doesn't even start.
E.V.O. Search for Eden
The game starts and will play, but is very glitchy.
Backgrounds do not line up properly with your position and often have scrambled tiles. It's very hard to navigate.
Luckily, the sprites show up properly. So it is somewhat playable.
F-Zero
Would be working perfect if there is fully HDMA. But with only the partial implementation, the raceway is now more or less scrolling right.
Nevertheless it's unplayable or at the very most only partially playable.
F-Zero Grand Prix 2
Just the same as by F-Zero. (look above).
Famicom Tantei Club Part II
Works great. Background settings are a bit weird however. You can use the one above, although if you need to change it, for instance if you can't read the text or selection screen, you can try 1000 or 1X00 or X100 or 0000. Just play around with them a bit.
I can’t say if the game is fully playable because it’s complete Japanese.
Final Fantasy 2
Game works now unexpectedly well! I also found a very good BG setting, listed above.
With this setting everything looks like it should. In other words:
All the sprites are visible, there are no graphical bugs and, the textbox is visible and complete readable
Even battles are nearly perfect, aside from a weird bug in which a second textbox flickers under the main one.
Only problems:
-Worldmap is corrupt (in the intro it looks like crap and ingame it's very small)
-The Menu is very corrupt
-Some sounds are missing (like when a enemy dies or you enter a house)
Final Fantasy 3
Game boots but crashes when you select New Game.
Final Fantasy 5
Game works well. Problems:
-The text is displayed, but in order to see it you must enter and then exit the SnezziDS config menu.
-The worldmap is, just like in SNES Advance, VERY garbled.
-It seems that the speed lies at about 95% (Watch the intro and listen to the sound)
Also the battle is pretty corrupt. But better than in previous versions.
Final Fantasy - Mystic Quest
Needs different settings for map/battles. 1, 2, 0, 3 seems to work alright with both, but if the map is glitched try 0, 1, 2, 3 (in order from top to bottom).
Final Fight 2 (J)
Gets weird flickering when sprites are moving on the screen. Otherwise plays pretty well. Some scrambled background items, but relatively minor.
Front Mission 2 - Gun Hazard
No longer crashes when starting a new game. The first mission is pretty glitched out now though, and whenever there's text on the screen the graphics get garbled. Works good otherwise.
Ganbare Goemon 3
With the new version it works. But the screen always flicks when there are any moving objects on the screen. Also, I don't know this game and since it's in Japanese, I can't say if it works or not, hence the "partial" rating in the above chart.
Gemfire
Works from what I saw pretty good.
Gokujyou Parodius
To get rid of graphical glitches set "BG Forced Mode" to Mode 2.
Gun Force
100% playable!
Gradius III
v0.24:
Game will start, play opening animation, and play at full speed in no-sound version.
v0.22a, v0.24a, v0.24b:
Game will freeze if opening animation plays or when you enter the weapon select screen.
Sound versions just don't seem to work at all.
Harvest Moon
Game does now boot again and runs fine. The main problem is with the odd music.
But the rest look pretty good. Again though, I don't know this game so I tested only a little bit walking and talking in the first village. But from what I saw it's pretty playable!
Hook
Nothing then a black screen.
Hyper Zone (J)
Playable, but needs HDMA to tilt the screen like F-Zero.
Thankfully, it's more playable than F-Zero because you don't have to turn.
Illusion of Time/Gaia
In v0.24b, the game works very well. Speed at 100% and no graphical bugs. In v0.25a, it crashes right after the Enix Logo
Joe & Mac
The game suffers from layering and scrolling issues. Menus are garbled. Playable but hard to see where your going.
Speed 100%
The Jungle Book
Game crashes after the Virgin Logo.
Kidou Senshi Gandum F91 (J)
Works, but some graphics don't show up and some text is garbled.
I also question if the renaming app got the name right, but that's unrelated to SnezziDS.
Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct works very great and the Speed lies at 100%! (Use BG layer order:1233)
Only problems:
-Energy bars are invisible. You can only see a little white stripe.
-There are some garbled graphics on nearly every screen but nevertheless it’s very playable.
Kirby's Dream Course
The barrier you bounce off of isn't always visable. Games gets stuck with a blue screen if you enter the Snezzi Config menu.
Knights of the Round
The game would be working perfectly if the screen wasn't so dark. It's very hard to see anything, rendering the game unplayable.
The Legend of Zelda – A Link to the Past
In v0.24b, the game works pretty good. Speed at 100%.
Only issues:
-The game can’t view dark rooms. Every screen is always bright.
-Rain covers up background, so you have to rearrange priorities to hide it. You can still hear it though.
In v0.25a, there is a bug that makes the game crash as soon as you leave your house.
Lemmings
Use BG Forced Mode 0 for trouble free gameplay. Sound version crashed at title screen for me.
The Lion King
Works Great. 100% speed, great layering, and great graphics. Almost perfect.
Only issues are some flickering of the screen and menu problems.
Lufia & The Fortress of Doom
Fully playable with some minor inconviences - Monsters appear broken apart and generally weird looking. - Some menus appear behind sprites no matter the settings. - Odd grid like pattern overlaying the screen during intro and some cutscenes. - Random crashes. Less crashes in Nosound version, but still crashes. Save often.
Lufia II - Rise of the Sinistrals
Intro and town scenes are fine. Battles you can read all text, but monsters and player are displayed incorrectly. Probably playable like this but not enjoyable. Almost there, good work coders!
Magic Sword
Health and status info scrolls with the background when you move. Sound sometimes has a wierd glitch that makes it use some of the sound effects as instruments. Kind of cool actually, lol.
Mario Paint
Works great. Only problem: There are some colour problems. Black is White and the other way around.
I recommend pressing the R button all the time because this speeds the movement of the cursor up.
Mega Man 7
Game works very well BUT INCREDIBLY SLOW! I would say that the speed lies at about 30% or something like that. Also the text is hard to read.
Mega Man X
v0.21b:
The first version that plays with sound, and it sounds great!
X's sprites appear to skip to a different frame every so often. Most notable while running.
Background layers disappear after you pause, but will come back once you get to them again.
Vile's airship is not completely visible in the intro stage as it's stuck behind the layer X is on.
The ground is transparent in Launch Octopus' stage so the background shows through.
Optimal BG layering: 1203
v0.22:
Probably the most playable version, but without sound.
Background layers no longer disappear and X's animation is smooth. Vile's airship still hidden.
Launch Octopus' stage no longer transparent, however the ship mid-stage is hidden behind background.
Use same layering as v0.21b
v0.23, v0.24:
Similar to v0.22, but has some random graphical artifacts that flicker on screen every so often. Looks like pieces of background being redrawn.
Layering order must be changed for Launch Octopus' stage. The water tinting is opaque and is now layered higher, so it makes the stage invisible.
The following layering works best for Launch Octopus' stage (however, text is invisible): 1223
This layering is a nice compromise that makes the stage playable and still allows most text: 1213
v0.24b:
Just like v0.23 and v0.24, but with sound! Glorious sound!!!
v0.22a, v0.23a, v0.24a:
Freezes shortly before or at Capcom logo.
Mega Man X 2
I tried about 50 different BG settings out but I didn’t manage it to get Mega Man visible. If someone one how to make MM visible please edit this entry.
Both Mega Man X2 and X3 used the C4 microchip for rendering sprite tiles of varying sizes (other than just 8x8) in addition to the 3D wireframe graphics. So even if X were visible, he would still be very scrambled.
Mega Man X 3
Game boots now. But it’s the very same as with Mega Man X 2…
Mega Man Soccer
There's a bug with the goals that makes them appear in the middle of the field, but it doesn't effect gameplay and only lasts a split second when it happens. Very playable!
The goals seem to appear on both sides of the screen as you near either one of them. It doesn't matter which one, but as soon as you see the goal you're heading towards, the other one appears on the opposite side of the screen.
Metal Marines
Very playable normally, but will randomly freeze (usually in battle screen).
Sometimes dialogue will appear garbled. Entering the configuration menu and exiting will fix this, however some images become text after that.
Also, when you switch to the "Attack" screen, the background is garbled until you go into the configuration menu and exit again.
Mortal Kombat 1
Game works great, although there is no sound.
Other problems:
-There are some problems with the graphics
-The screen (for example the energy bars flicker sometimes
Mortal Kombat II
Nothing at first, then a black screen. It runs in Snezziboy though.
Mortal Kombat 3
Nothing at first, then a black screen. It runs in Snezziboy though.
NBA Jam
Menu's a little hard to read, otherwise perfect.
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
Speed 100%. Some flickering during gameplay.
Known issues:
Health and Status on top bar scrolls with the level. Not really a problem since it rolls back so you can almost always see your status.
Ninja Gaiden 1 crashes very rarely. Usually the first time you start playing and changing the setting it will crash but just turn off the DS and On again it should be fine, since the BG settings will be saved.
Ninja Gaiden 2 crashes
Ninja Gaiden 3 Crashes
Ninja Warriors Again
Speed 100%. Sound Good Graphics 99,9% Perfectly Playable.A little black line appears on top of screen And The character select screen has corrupted
Plok!
Very corrupted graphics. Because of that the game is just unplayable.
PGA Tour 96
All seems fine until you actually go to start the round of golf. It freezes before the first hole.
Prince of Persia
Looks and sounds great. Status windows display behind background with all settings that look correct, a very minor annoyance. Easily playable and very enjoyable in current state.
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Game runs very bad (very corrupt tiles). Speed at 100%.
R-Type 3
Works fine. Problems:
Game has very corrupt graphics, hence the Partial rating in the chart
Raiden Trad
There are some missing graphics in some of the buildings and such. Aparently they're on the same layer as the bomb animation, so with them visable there's a constant explosion on the screen. Score counter and stuff are missing as well, but other then that it works great! Very playble!
Rock n' Roll Racing
Menus are very garbled but ingame works great.
Romancing SaGa
Game runs and with 100% speed, but the game has many graphical bugs and crashes often.
Rudra no Hihou (T-Eng)
You need to change the background settings every so often to get the most out of this game. Text is invisable (possibly HDMA?) and name entry screen/load screen are glitched, but everything else works alright.
Settings to use:
In town: 1203
World Map: 1023
In battle: 0123
Secret of Evermore
The game crashes after you start the first fight. The game suffers from major graphical issues. Speed 100%
Secret of Mana
Works great! I managed it to get to Pandora with no problems!
Only some problems are remaining:
-Some layer problems
-The music is HORRIBLE!!! I mean that it's very corrupt.
Shin Kidoesenki Gundam Wing - Endless Duel (J)
Menus are scrambled. Playable otherwise.
Sim Ant
It's just like before. It’s not really playable, although speed is now better.
On the grass field, you can only see a quarter of the whole screen. In addition, the only way to see the selection screen is if you enter the SnezziDS config menu and then exit it.
Soul Blazer
The screen gets stuck black if you bring up the Snezzi configuration menu. Just sort through the preset BG options with L+R+Select+Up until you find one that displays the ingame text.
Sparkster
Health bar disapears sometimes. Water in the first level is glitchy. Very playable!
Star Fox
Because of the use of the “Super FX” Chip the Screen remains black.
Only sound is playing.
Star Ocean
Because of the use of the “S-DD1” Chip the Screen remains black.
Street Fighter 2 – Turbo
Works great. The bug with the barrel stage is solved. Problems:
-Some minor graphic problems in the backgrounds.
-The selections in the titlescreen are invisible.
Street Fighter II - The World Warrior
Some minor graphic problems in the backgrounds.
-The selections in the Titlescreen are invisible.
Super Bomberman 2
Stage shrunk in upper-left corner. Probably uses 16x16 background tiles. Works okay otherwise with sound.
Super Bomberman 3
Plays very well, actually. There's some glitching when showing the spaceship flying in (it shows the spaceship at full size, then shows the animation of it flying in from the background) and the very bottom part of the stage looks like it's cut across and slid over a tile or two. Otherwise the game seems to play fine so far.
Super Bomberman 4
Same as Super Bomberman 2. Stage shrunk in upper-left corner. Works okay otherwise with sound.
Super Bomberman 5
Same as Super Bomberman 3. Everything is visible and plays well.
Sound has some distortion, though.
Super Castlevania IV
v0.24:
It is highly recommended that you select Mode 1 for the first area in order to maintain playability. Once you reach the second area, you can switch back to Auto.
Otherwise it’s nearly perfect. Speed at 100% and no graphical bugs.
In v0.25a, the game crashes while the hero stand in front of the Castle.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Setting the BG Forced Mode to Mode 2 gets rid of all the garbled graphics ingame, but also removes some graphics from the intro and makes the title menu invisable.
Super Mario All-Stars
Game runs pretty good. Problems:
-Super Mario Bros. 3 is unplayable. The levels are very corrupt.
-Also the game CAN crash sometimes by exiting one of the games (by selecting Save
and Exit)
-The sky from Super Mario Bros. 2 remains black
The scrolling in the selection screen doesn't work as good as it does in Snezziboy.
The pictures scroll correctly but the names don't scroll at all.
The game is listed as being partially playable due to the issues with SMB3
Super Mario Kart
Because of the use of the “DSP-1” Chip the game is unplayable.
You can get ingame but you can’t play. As soon as the game starts the Lakitu comes and grab the driver. Also you can’t see the raceway.
Super Mario RPG
Because of the use of the “SA-1” Chip the Screen remains black.
Check the See Also section for details.
Super Mario World
In v0.24b, the game runs very great. Speed at 100% and nearly no graphical bugs.
Only issues:
-The water is not visible
-The platform at the first boss is invisible
-In the cave level there are some layer problems
Otherwise perfect!
However, in v0.25a, there is a serious bug, as reported by Snake:
In the first worlds castle there is a bug for me that doesn’t let me go on.
It happened as soon as I entered the room where this big brown thing stamps down onto the floor. The screen turned suddenly black and it crashed.
Please tell me if this doesn’t happen to you.
Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island
Because of the use of the “Super FX” Chip the Screen remains black.
Super Metroid
Success stories are mixed with this game. It seems to work well enough in v0.24b, aside from the following bugs:
Enegry Bar and Map invisible.
The game freezes upon attemtping to escape the space colony. This issue can be fixed by using an SNES save file, although the lack of the HUD makes it difficult to play.
It has been reported that in v0.25a, the version that would allow for the HUD to be visible (based on Snezziboy findings), the game crashes right after the opening Nintendo logo. However, some have also reported that it works fine. One user who uses an M3 CF claims that it required several tries before it worked correctly.
Based on Snezziboy findings, if the game does work in v0.25a, the best background settings are 221X for normal gameplay and 222X for viewing the start menu as well as a few select areas in gameplay.
In both versions, set the BG FORCED MODE to "Mode 7" for the elevator shaft area in order to fix the garbled graphics. After you're done, set it back to Auto.
Super Nova (U)
Game works well with only minor bugs, such as the fact that the text at the top sometimes goes behind background clouds and cosmic dusts. Speed is at 100%.
Further meddling with the BG settings could potentially fix the aforementioned bug.
