PassMe2

From PHWiki

PassMe2 is an update of PassMe that works with the new DS Firmware. PassMe type devices are inserted into the DS slot and tricks the DS into allowing unsigned DS code to run from the GBA cartridge slot in full DS mode.

PassMe2 needs to be programmed to work only with one specific game card. This is necessary due to the new workaround.

Because of the new workaround PassMe2 is somewhat cumbersome to use both with homebrew and pirated roms. It's a good idea to install FlashMe as soon as possible.

  • PassMe2 works with DS Firmware version 1–3.
  • PassMe2 works with DS Firmware version 4 and later.
  • PassMe2 works with the DS Lite.
  • PassMe2 does not work with the GBA Movie Player.

PassMe or PassMe2 or NoPass

PassMe2 is generally being superseded by NoPass type devices.

See article PassMe for more info on which kind of PassMe to pick.

Technical details

Loopy released the update that PassMe2 is using. It works around the new DS firmware by using a BIOS buffer overflow to "trampoline" code in the GBA flash card's SRAM.
This does not work with the GBA Movie Player since it lacks SRAM, but it works with all other GBA flash cards, including M3 and SuperCard.

If you have a first generation PassMe (or clone) and you know how to solder, you can build a cable to reprogram it. The PassKey to PassMe2 article has the detailed instructions.

PassMe2 variants

Each PassMe2 needs to be programmed with a specific firmware that works with a specific original game card. As such, the commercial PassMe2 variants out there all come with equipment to program them.

  • EZ Pass 2 from the company behind the EZ Flash cards, programmed via a PC printer port.
  • Passkey2 from the company behind M3 and G6, programmed via a device directly from a GBA or DS.
  • SuperPass 2 from the company behind Supercard, programmed via a PC printer port.
  • PassCard 2 from the company behind M3 and G6, does not need programming.

You can also get a homebrew or preprogrammed PassMe2 device, these will only work with the game card you specify. These are available from dspassme.com and natrium42.com.

There is nothing unique that ties a branded PassMe2 variant to a specific flash card. They are all just redesigns/rebrands of the original PassMe2.
