How to Convert Videos
First, download and install PSP Video 9. This programs makes converting videos very simple, but still allows you to control the quality.
When you have installed the program, run it, and you will be greeted with a window, with a few buttons across the top. Click on Setup. There will be a few tabs here, but you only need to worry about Settings and Profile Picker.
On the Settings tab, you can change various settings for video quality, and where to output converted videos. Ignore the video quality box for now. If you wish to leave converted videos in the default directory, ignore it as well. Otherwise, click the Browse button, select a new location, and click OK.
Now, click on the Profile Picker tab. This allows you to view the approximate sizes of videos, with the selected Quality Profile. It will also tell you what the Profile is best suited for. You can also manually input the video and audio bitrates, to better gauge the size of the output video. Obviously, the lower the filesize, the worse the quality is. Select the one that best suits your needs.
This guide assumes you have a large Memory Stick (at least 512Mb), which should be sufficient for a 2-hour movie. If you can't fit the video on to your Memory Stick, just change the Quality profile until you find one which will fit your Memory Stick.
When you have selected a Quality Profile that suits your needs, click on the Convert button at the top of the window. You will be greeted with a fairly plain screen. To simply convert a video, click on the One-Click Transcode button. You will be shown a familiar file selection dialog. Locate the file you wish to convert, and click OK. The program will then start transcoding (converting) the video. It may take several hours, depending on the speed of your computer. When it has finished transcoding, your PSP friendly .MP4 file will be located in the Output directory specified earlier.
Uploading converted videos to your PSP
The program can also automatically upload the converted file to your PSP, in the appropriate directories, when it has finished. Turn your PSP on, and go to Settings and put it into USB mode, making sure it is connected to your PC via the USB cable. Click on the Setup button again, and go to the Settings tab. In the box where it says PSP Drive, click the Auto Find button, and then click on the Search for PSP button. This will attempt to locate your PSP. You only need to do this once, the program will remember the location of your PSP. If the program cannot find the PSP at a later time, just use the Search option again.
When the program has located your PSP, click on the Copy button at the top of the window. You will be shown two file panes. The left side will be files on your PC, where you told the program to put transcoded video files, and on the right, it will show the files located on your PSPs Memory Stick. At the bottom, it will also tell you the free space on your Memory Stick. In the left pane, select the file you wish to copy to your PSP. At the bottom of the window, there are a few buttons, simply click on Copy Video to PSP, and the program will automatically place transcoded videos in the appropriate place on your Memory Stick.
When it has copied the file to your PSP, which should take a minute or two, take your PSP out of USB mode, and go to Video. Select Memory Stick, and your file(s) will be listed there. Select the one you want, and the PSP should begin playback.
If you wish to manually upload files to your PSP, using Explorer, or some file navigation tool, select the PSP drive (on my computer, it is always F:). Create a new folder in the ROOT of the Memory Stick (NOT in the PSP folder), and call it MP_ROOT. Open that folder, and create ANOTHER folder called 100MNV01. Place any transcoded videos you wish into that folder. Take the PSP out of USB mode, and go to Video. Select Memory Stick, and proceed as usual.
Other Stuff
Unfortunately, at this time, transcoded videos cannot have actual NAMES for files. Instead, they use non-descript file names like M4V00001.MP4. The PSP will not recognize filenames that are not formatted like M4Vxxxxx.MP4, where x is simply replaced by a number.
Also, don't bother trying this without a large Memory Stick. The 32Mb Memory Stick that comes with your PSP cannot hold even the worst quality TV episode. The smallest I have been able to convert a 21 minute TV episode was 44Mb, which is obviously too large.
It is possible to convert DVD movies to play on your PSP, using any available DVD ripping program, and following this instructions above. However, that is beyond the scope of this guide.
