Intro
From PHWiki
An Intro is a small graphic demo, usually 64 kilobytes or smaller.
In the GBA Scene, many release groups add intros to the ROMs that they release. Tools exist for adding intros to ROMs and removing them from ROMs. Early tools always added the intro to the last few kilobytes of the ROM, which interfered with ROM stripping, but newer tools place the intro directly after the end of the original ROM data.
Historically, when dumping games was something few people could do, and the roms often had to be cracked, intros were added by the group responsible for making the game possible to pirate, as a badge of honour.
With GBC and GBA roms, there is rarely a need for cracks, and the equipment for dumping roms is widely available, so the intros are mainly added to show which group came out with the release first, and give the coders of the group an opportunity to show off their demo skills.
The first handheld scene release with an intro was a GBC game called Hollywood Pinball from Capital (released on 27th March 1999, GBC Release list 0082). The release caused much controversy, but intros were here to stay and developed considerably from these early days.
Rom collectors and archivers often disapprove of intros, as they try to obtain clean dumps of roms. No-Intro is one of the more prolific associations doing this with GBA roms. Cowering and some of the people involved with the GoodTools also work on redumping roms to make sure clean dumps are catalogued.
