Homebrew
From PHWiki
Homebrew refers to home made code or games. Typically it's used to refer to code made to run on devices that's originally only made to run official licenced code.
Homebrew is often set in contrast with Piracy. Homebrew coders typically try to distance themselves from pirates who they consider immoral. But in reality pirates and homebrew coders often end up helping each other (on purpose or not) since they both have the same ultimate goal, running code in ways that the manufacturer didn't intend.
Technically the methods used to get homebrew code to run are often questionable in themselves, especially with recent laws like the DMCA. Often you need to use things like copyrighted ROM headers or snippets of proprietary ROMs to get homebrew to run. Sometimes decryption or region coding needs to be circumvented. However, courts have tended not to enforce copyright laws against the copying of insubstantial parts of a program for purposes of interoperability.
