DS Saves
From PHWiki
The current DS save types are EEPROM and FLASH.
EEPROM saves are known to be 4kbit (0.5kbyte), 64kbit (8kbyte) and 512kbit (64kbyte)
FLASH saves are known to be 2Mbit (256kbyte), 4Mbit (512kbyte) possibly also 512kbit (64kbyte).
Depending on your flash card, you sometimes need an original card with the same save type and size to be able to reliably save pirated DS roms.

Backing up saves
Etool
Etool and EtoolSMS by Cory1492 can back up EEPROM and Flash saves from original DS cards to GBA flash cards and several other devices.
When backing up to a GBA flash card, Flash saves have to be compressed to 64kByte, and certain 2Mbit saves are too big to fit.
NDSEEPROM
NDSEEPROM by DEIVETRU can back up saves from original DS cards to a GBA flash card, but only EEPROM saves.
NDS EEPROM TOOL/RAIN
NDS EEPROM TOOL can be used to backup saves from original DS cards to the GBA Movie Player.
REIN (formerly RAIN) is the updated version of NDS EEPROM TOOL.
Others
G6 Flash has a built in function for backing up saves.
Action Replay Max can be used to to backup saves.
SavSender can be used to back up saves to a PC over a wireless connection. It is especially useful for users of SLOT-1 cards that do not support hot swapping.
RAC can be used to back up and restore the 2Mbit flash Animal Crossing: Wild World save to SLOT-2 cards, and it automatically names each backup file after your town's name.
The Nintendogs trainer can be used to backup the 2Mbit Flash Nintendogs save, but it's not very stable. Try Etool first.
Save Conversion
max2sc
max2sc by Cory1492 converts .duc and .dss saves from the Action Replay Max into .sav files that can be used with Supercard and several other flash cards. The file needs to be renamed from "filename.duc.out" to "filename.sav" after converting.
GBA Comparison
The DS save types follows the ones on GBA pretty closely:
- The EEPROM saves are identical to the GBA ones in size.
- The FLASH saves are bigger than they were on GBA.
- There are no SRAM saves. There is no room in the small DS cards for the battery needed.
